KRML in Carmel: Great Jazz, Great Store, Great Memories
November 4, 2008
Walking in downtown Carmel at night is always a treat. It’s quiet, the art gallery windows seem different and there’s a local pub or two — Jack London’s and Brophy’s come to mind — within walking distance from any accommodation location.
But perhaps my favorite stop is the KRML studio, museum and retail store on San Carlos and Fifth Ave. I can’t help but either walk past the place and just look in the window for a minutes (if it’s very late) or stop in early in the evening and reminisce while looking at the cool jazz stuff. Much of it is related to Clint Eastwood and his long-time passion for jazz as an enthusiast and composer.
Usually, there’s some standard jazz cut playing and it reminds me of my father, who was a lifelong jazz fan and a good selection of the retro jazz albums and CDs available for sale in the store.
Sometimes, when you walk past the studio and store, a show host in sitting in the front window. I always take the time to wave or give a “thumb’s up.”
The folks at KRML have a good presence on the web, too, and they recently forwarded an update on the station’s web store stock. Here’s the notice (edited for brevity):
“We have just expanded our web store to include some great gift ideas for any of the upcoming holidays, birthdays, and special events in your lives! (By the way, did you know we don’t charge postage for CD’s shipped in the lower 48? Just call and have us find your favorite band, singer, swinger, or artists of any kind — if it’s in print we’ll mail it postage free!. And if you’re out of state that saves 7.25% California tax as well!)
We’ve kept the choices simple, easy to see, easy to order, too. Just go to www.krmlradio.com and click on “store” and then scroll down to see the children’s books and CDs, tote bags in many colors, 100% wool berets to fit all sizes, and all the logo clothing items we carry, too!
