Jesus Campos of King City, Calif., and Beth Woodward of Orrville, Ohio, ran to hard-fought but comfortable victories Sunday in the 26th edition of the Big Sur International Marathon.
Running on an amended out-and-back course necessitated by the collapse of a segment of the usual point-to-point course during an early season storm, Campos was victorious in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 54 seconds. He won by more than two minutes over Herman Achmueller of Italy.
Woodward, 35, claimed the women’s title by 4 1/2 minutes over Anne Marie Moffatt in 3:05:05. Woodward led most of the race, lost the lead to Nikia Brautovich, 20, of Aptos, but regained her advantage and wasn’t challenged in the waning miles. Brautovich finished third.
Campos had finished among the top-six men in each of the past five years at the marathon, but he overtook struggling Mario Mendoza of Bend, Ore., who had lead for most of the race, with about one mile left. Mendoza finished fourth.
The race was held under temperatures. It was 51 degrees at the 6:45 a.m. start with a slight ocean wind.
