Monterey Peninsula Wikipedia-Style





The City of Monterey, located on Monterey Bay along the Pacific Coast in central California, home to the Naval Postgraduate School the Defense Language Institute, former Fort Ord, which is now the site of California State University Monterey Bay; Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Monterey American Viticultural Area; Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and a Marine Mammal Center field station located in the area.

As of 2005, the city population was 30,641. The city is noted for its rich history of resident artists beginning in the late 1800s, its famed fishery and it's the birthplace of the semi-hard cheese known as Monterey Jack.


Big Sur is a sparsely populated region of the central California coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. This landscape produces stunning views and has made Big Sur a popular tourist destination.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, located in a former sardine cannery and a former brewery on Cannery Row in Monterey, California, is one of the largest and most respected aquariums in the world. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million and holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species.

Among the aquarium's numerous exhibits, two are of particular note. The centerpiece of the near shore wing is a 33-foot (10-m) high tank for viewing California coastal marine life, This tank was the first in the world to simulate tidal currents on a large scale.

The second exhibit of note is a one million gallon tank in the Outer Bay Wing which features the world's largest single paned window. Crafted by a Japanese company, the window is actually four panes seamlessly glued together through a proprietary process.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a paved road racing track used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, originally constructed in 1957 near Monterey, California, USA. The current racetrack is 2.238 miles in length (3.602 kilometers), has eleven turns, including the famous (and gut-wrenching) "Corkscrew" at Turns 8 and 8A, and a 300-foot elevation change.


Carmel-by-the-Sea, sometimes abbreviated as Carmel, is a small town endowed with a rich artistic history situated on the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey County, California. In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the "artists, poets and writers of Carmel-by-the-Sea" and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts."
Known for its Victorian homes, Asilomar State Beach, artistic legacy and the annual migration of the Monarch butterflies, Pacific Grove has more Victorian houses per capita than anywhere else in America. The coastal city had a population of 15,522 as of the 2000 census. Pacific Grove also known as the location of the Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously-operating lighthouse on the West Coast, Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, located in the historic downtown, and the Stowitts Museum & Library.
