Asilomar State Beach and its accompanying conference center are among the most well-known destinations on the Monterey Peninsula. It’s surprising, therefore, that several other nearby locations are among the same area’s most unheralded accommodation choices. One option is Pacific Gardens Inn. Sushi lovers nationwide will soon have a way to make seafood choices that please the palate and safeguard the world’s ocean wildlife. While the consumer guides — in print, online and mobile device versions — differ in appearance, they’re based on similar data and offer a consistent message: Sushi choices by individual consumers have an impact on the future of the ocean.
“For the first time, sushi lovers have tools that enable them to join the growing movement of those making ocean-friendly choices that protect life in the seas now and for generations to come,” said Julie Pareles, executive director of Blue Ocean Institute (www.blueocean.org).

It’s not an official name, but travelers to the Monterey Peninsula have the largest selection of motel and hotel rooms along “Motel-Hotel Row” in Monterey. The properties extend from nearly downtown Monterey toward Highway 1 on Munras Ave. There are a handful of choices on the east side of the street and a vast selection on the west side, like Mariposa Inn & Suites. Budget locations to a new suite-dominated property, national chain-operated locales to family owned facilities, if you’re in need of a room in a central location, it’s a hard place to beat.
