Tiger Woods will be back, confirms play in AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

tiger1

For the first time since the 2010 U.S. Open, Tiger Woods will play on the Monterey Peninsula when he begins his 2012 PGA Tour season at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The tournament, with reigning champion D.A. Points and comedian/actor Bill Murray returning to defend their respective pro and pro-am titles, will be held Feb. 7-12. The 72-hole championship rounds will begin Feb. 9 with the final round scheduled Feb. 12 at Pebble Beach.

Woods made the announcement to compete via a Jan. 9 post on his website, commenting the tournament's home course, Pebble Beach, "might be the prettiest place on earth."

Woods last played in the event in 2002 when Poppy Hills was part of the three-course rotation. The former world No. 1 didn't like the course, nor did he like the 180-player field and long rounds that are part of the pro-am and its celebrity field.

The Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club replaced Poppy Hills and will be in its third season of returning to the event after a many-year absence. The event's sponsor AT&T, a former personal sponsor for Woods, benefits the Tiger Woods Foundations. The tournament field is now also only 156 players.

"I'm excited to start my PGA Tour season at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am," Woods said on his website. "AT&T is a great partner to my foundation, and I'm looking forward to playing in this event. I haven't been to this tournament lately, but I have a lot of good memories at Pebble. It will be fun going back."

Woods won the 2000 AT&T when rallied from a seven-stroke deficit with seven holes to play. He returned to Pebble Beach four months later to win the U.S. Open by 15 shots and was the only play to break par.

Woods tied for 13th at the AT&T in 2001 and then tied for 12th in 2002, his last time playing in the AT&T.

Woods had a final-round 75 and finished tied for fourth at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Although it hasn't been confirmed, Woods is expected to play in the AT&T pro-am with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, a former amateur PGA Tour tournament player partner.

I can’t remember the first time I visited the Monterey Peninsula. But in the early 1980s my parents purchased a small house on 12th and Casanova in Carmel. I called it the Gingerbread House. Like anyone who visits the area … Read More
